Mr. Ali Abdullah Al-Kathiri, Chairman of the National Assembly of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), met today, Tuesday, in the city of Al-Mukalla, with a delegation from the office of the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, headed by Mr. Masaki Watanabe, the Chief Officer of the Political Affairs Division.
At the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Al-Kathiri welcomed the delegation from the UN Envoy's office, affirming the STC's support for the Special Envoy's endeavors to revive the peace process.
During the meeting, the Chairman of the Assembly outlined the deteriorating service situation in the South, particularly in the capital, Aden, due to continuous power outages. He stressed the necessity for the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) and the government to shoulder their responsibilities in addressing the major service breakdowns and the worsening living and economic crises, including the disbursement of salaries and the securing of fuel for electricity.
Al-Kathiri also presented an overview of the immense sacrifices made by the Southern Armed Forces in their battle against terrorist groups and on the front lines against the Houthi terrorist militia and asserted that all indicators confirm that this militia, which continues its aggressive war against the South and its ongoing escalation in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, will not succumb to peace.
He expressed regret over the persistence of the ongoing crisis in Hadhramaut for over a year, confirming that the STC possesses a clear vision for a solution through the outcomes of the liaison committee formed at the beginning of the crisis, which met the aspirations of the people of the governorate.
The Chairman of the Assembly noted that the continuation of the crisis does not serve Hadhramaut nor the interests of its residents, reiterating that the STC is open to dialogue with all political components in a manner that serves the interests of the governorate's residents.
Al-Kathiri clarified that the celebration of the 14th of October Revolution in the city of Shibam, Valley of Hadhramaut, which witnessed broad participation from the districts of the valley, once again highlighted the STC's extensive popular base in Hadhramaut.
He pointed out that the STC's project is based on establishing a federal state of the South where each governorate manages its own affairs. He stressed that Hadhramaut will have its full rights within the framework of the upcoming federal state, in accordance with the provisions of the Southern National Charter, which guarantees Hadhramaut and all governorates of the South their full and undiminished rights and partnership in formulating and administering the constitution of the envisioned state.
For his part, the Deputy Head of the Local Leadership Executive Body (LLEB) of the STC in Hadhramaut Governorate, Mr. Ali Ahmed Al-Jafri, spoke about the public situation in the governorate, explaining that the ongoing conflict is wrapped in the rhetoric of rights, while in reality, it is a conflict over influence and interests.
In turn, the head of the UN Envoy's office delegation, Mr. Watanabe, expressed his appreciation for the efforts exerted by the STC in supporting the peace process and affirmed that the Envoy's office places great importance on listening to various parties and political and social components, including the STC, to contribute to building a comprehensive and sustainable peace.
