STC Acting President Discusses Recent Political and Humanitarian Developments with MENA Director at Friedrich Ebert-Stiftung

Mr. Ali Abdullah Al-Kathiri, Acting President of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) and Chairman of the National Assembly, held a meeting on Monday with Mr. Richard Probst, Director of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Foundation’s Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Office, and Mr. Constantin Grund, the foundation’s Non-Resident Representative for Yemen.

At the beginning of the meeting, attended by Dr. Saleh Mohsen Al-Haj, Head of the STC’s Foreign and Expatriates Affairs Authority (FEAA), Mr. Ali Al-Kathiri welcomed FES Foundation Director Richard Probst, and commended his keenness to visit the capital, Aden, to closely see the political and humanitarian situation in governorates of the South and liberated areas.

The meeting discussed the latest political, humanitarian, military, economic, and service challenges facing the people of the South, including ongoing Houthi militia attacks on Southern territories and the dire living conditions worsening the crisis.

Al-Kathiri pointed out that the aggressive acts of the Houthi militia and its attacks on international maritime navigation in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and its blatant exploitation of the Gaza conflict to justify targeting vital shipping lanes, expose their true terrorist ideology, alert the world to the danger of these terrorist militias, the terrorist approach on which they were founded, and their clear desire not to comply with peace efforts.

During the meeting, which was attended by Dr. Najeeb Qayid Fare'a, Head of the Department of International Organizations and Human Rights at the FEAA, Al-Kathiri reaffirmed that the STC's commitment to facilitating any challenges facing the German FES Foundation and its interventions in all vital sectors in the governorates of the South in coordination with the FEAA, relevant bodies of the STC and the government, highlighting the importance of friends in the free world understanding the cause of the people of the South as one of the key issues, without a just solution to which, fulfilling the aspirations of the people of the South for independence and the restoration of their state and identity, lasting peace in the country will remain elusive.

Dr. Saleh Al-Haj underscored the importance of the relationship between the STC and the FES Foundation being an ideal one across all levels and working towards broadening political horizons and strengthening the relationship between the friendly people of the Federal Republic of Germany and the people of the South and its political leadership, led by the STC. Dr. Al-Haj expressed the Council's aspiration for mutual visits between the two sides and the re-opening of the German embassy in the capital, Aden.

For their part, Mr. Probst and Mr. Grund affirmed the Friedrich FES Foundation's ongoing support for all political and humanitarian affairs and their readiness to exert maximum efforts in this regard, praising the positive spirit of the STC leadership and its resilience on the ground despite the current challenges amid complex circumstances.

The meeting was attended by Mahmoud Qayyeh, acting non-resident representative and senior program manager of the German Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Mayada al-Baydani, director of women and youth programs at the foundation, and Aseel Mohammed Ahmed, deputy director of the Department of international organizations and Human Rights Affairs at the FEAA.
