Al-Kathiri Gets Briefed on Overall Environmental Situation in Governorates of the South


Mr. Ali Abdullah Al-Kathiri, Acting President of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) and Chairman of the National Assembly, was briefed today, Monday, on the workflow of the General Authority for Environmental Protection and its branches in the governorates and the myriad of challenges facing the progress of its work.

This came during his meeting today, Monday, in his office, with Dr. Walid Al-Shuaibi, Director General of the Public Administration for Environmental Monitoring and Assessment at the General Authority for Environmental Protection.

Mr. Al-Kathiri listened to Dr. Al-Shuaibi’s detailed explanation of the overall environmental situation in the South, particularly in Shabwah and Hadramaut governorates. The briefing highlighted the environmental hazards facing oil concession areas due to oil spills from dilapidated pipelines into drinking water sources, toxic emissions associated with oil extraction, and the risks of oil and petroleum pollution in ports and coastal areas to marine ecosystems and fisheries.

Al-Kathiri expressed appreciation for the endeavors undertaken by the General Authority for Environmental Protection in the diligent monitoring and evaluation of environmental hazards affecting the South, underscoring the imperative of implementing comprehensive measures to rectify the ongoing oil spill crisis and holding relevant parties accountable for these violations, which cause substantial environmental and health damage in the South.
