Mr. Ali Abdullah Al-Kathiri, Acting President of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) and Chairman of the National Assembly, chaired an emergency meeting today, Monday, which was attended by senior STC officials, including Mr. Moamen Al-Saqqaf, a member of the STC’s Presidium and head of the Local Leadership Executive Body (LLEB) of the STC in the capital, Aden, Mr. Ahmed Lamlas, Governor of the capital, Aden, the STC ministerial bloc led by Dr. Abdul Nasser Al-Wali, and several deputy ministers.
The meeting was dedicated to discussing the dire decline in the living and service conditions in the capital, Aden, and the rest of the governorates of the South, exacerbated by the government's failure to fulfill its obligations to citizens and the absence of any serious indications of sustainable solutions.
The meeting emphasized that the STC, with its popularly mandated leadership, cannot stand idly by in the face of the daily suffering of citizens in the capital, Aden, and the rest of the governorates of the South as a result of the ongoing decline of basic services, particularly electricity, the collapse of the value of the local currency, delayed public-sector salary payments, and the worsening environmental and public health situation amid a clear absence of any meaningful remedies.
The meeting emphasized that national and moral duty necessitates taking concrete actions to confront this catastrophic situation, which threatens to spiral out of control if unmitigated, affirming that the moment calls for unflinching transparency, bold decision-making, and sincere alignment with the suffering of citizens, far removed from any other considerations.
In light of these urgent concerns, the meeting decided to implement a series of immediate measures, reflecting the STC's sense of responsibility towards the people of the South. Chief among these is the formation of an emergency committee, which will be in an open-ended session, comprising representatives from the STC, the government, and the local authority in the capital, Aden, to monitor on-the-ground conditions firsthand and to provide daily public reports on developments, ensuring transparency and bolstering public confidence in crisis-resolution efforts.
Furthermore, the meeting resolved to formally notify the UN Security Council, the UN Special Envoy, and the key countries sponsoring the political process, led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United States of America (USA), and the United Kingdom (UK), to apprise them of the scale of suffering faced by citizens and to demand urgent international action to address the roots of the crisis, ensuring effective intervention to halt the ongoing deterioration.
The meeting further recommended the STC President and Vice Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) cancel any unnecessary political or ceremonial events, whether for the STC or the local authorities, and their funds would then be redirected to urgently support humanitarian and service aspects in order to alleviate the suffering of citizens at this critical phase.
Finally, the meeting further asserted that these newly approved measures do not contradict any long-term strategic steps being prepared, but rather represent a basis for strengthening public trust and creating a conducive environment for any upcoming reforms.
