President Aidarous Qassem Al-Zubaidi, President of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) and Vice Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council (LPC), along with Prime Minister Salem bin Breik; His Excellency Mohammed Hamad Al Zaabi, the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to our country; and Ahmed Hamid Lamlas, Governor of the capital, Aden, inaugurated on Thursday the second phase of the solar power plant project in the capital, Aden, a major step in addressing the crippling energy crisis, as the expansion is set to add 120 megawatts of generation capacity, bringing the plant's total output to 240 MW upon its expected completion in 2026.
President Al-Zubaidi congratulated residents of the capital, Aden, on this inauguration of the second phase of the strategic project, which will add 120 megawatts to the previous station, expressing his gratitude and appreciation for the unlimited fraternal support provided by the UAE to our country in the energy sector and other development sectors, under the direct supervision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the brotherly UAE.
President Al-Zubadi added, "On this momentous day, we have inaugurated the 53-megawatt solar power station in Shabwa governorate and laid the foundation for the second-phase expansion of the Aden solar plant. This strategic project marks a critical step in alleviating the suffering of our people in the capital next summer, with similar stations to follow in other governorates."
For his part, Ambassador Mohammed Al-Zaabi affirmed that the launch of the solar power plant's second phase was initiated upon the generous directives of HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, extending his gratitude to all parties that contributed to the success of the project's first phase.
Eng. Ali Al-Shammari, Managing Director and CEO of Global South Utilities, stated that the project's second phase will be completed before next summer, adding that the company remains committed to supporting the energy sector in the country, believing that reliable power is fundamental to life and development in all countries.
The project, implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, represents the largest of its kind in the country and marks a significant step toward boosting renewable energy infrastructure and reducing consumption of imported fuel.
The second phase is projected to generate approximately 247,000 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to power 687,000 homes, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 142,000 tons per year.
Upon full completion of both phases, total annual emissions reductions will reach nearly 285,000 tons—equivalent to removing more than 85,000 gasoline-powered cars from the road each year.
The second phase will also include the installation of more than 194,000 solar panels, a significant move toward strengthening the energy security and improving air quality across the country.
