President Al-Zubaidi Meets with Headship of General Federation of Workers' Unions of the South to Discuss Demands and Viable Solutions
President Aidarous Qassem Al-Zubaidi, President of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) and Vice Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), met on Monday with the headship of the General Federation of Workers' Unions of the South (GFWUS) and its affiliated unions and syndicates, in the presence of the STC's ministers in the government, to focus on addressing workers’ demands and exploring viable solutions "within available means and possibilities."
During the meeting, attended by senior officials of the STC, including Mr. Ali Al-Kathiri, Chairman of the National Assembly, and Major General Kamal Hamshari, a member of the Presidium of the STC and Acting Secretary-General, Brigadier General Pilot Nasser Al-Saadi, Head of the Community Commission assisting the Presidium of the STC, and Brigadier General Ahmed Hassan, Head of the STC’s Security Department, President Al-Zubaidi praised the active role of the unions of the South in advocating the rights of their members and their adherence to peaceful ways to gain them, highlighting that the unions represent a fundamental pillar in protecting workers' rights and advancing social justice, which reflects the awareness and high responsibility of the General Federation.
The President reiterated the STC’s firm support for workers’ legitimate struggle to improve living conditions, affirming the council's commitment to amplifying their demands within both the PLC and the government and working to extract their rights as per stipulated laws and regulations.
The president has touched on the dire economic conditions facing public employees due to the severe economic downturn, the collapse of the local currency, and declining its purchasing power, reaffirming that the STC will spare no effort to provide all possible assistance within available resources, despite major challenges facing the country amid the halt in crude oil exports, which constitute more than two-thirds of the public budget.
President Al-Zubaidi called on the Federation to intensify efforts to preserve, enhance, and develop institutions as a cornerstone for the state of the South and future generations, stressing the pivotal role of unions as a watchful eye that monitors the progress of institutional work and a constructive hand that helps to build and correct imbalances, contributing to achieving development and stability.
Following this, the President listened to the demands submitted by the Federation in their statement issued during today's protest at the Parades Square in the capital, Aden, and the ministers provided clarifications regarding the measures taken by the government and local authorities in the capital to meet these demands, emphasizing that these demands represent legitimate rights for public sector employees, and confirmed their commitment to follow up with relevant authorities to ensure their fulfillment in accordance with the law and available resources.
At the end of the meeting, President Al-Zubaidi directed government ministers to continue engaging with the headship of the General Federation to explore viable solutions to meet the employee's demands and to develop a matrix to ensure their implementation within available resources, as that would contribute to improving workers' conditions and strengthening their role in building state institutions.
