LANDMARK OCCASION AS PRESIDENT Al-ZUBAIDI ATTENDS 78TH SESSION OF UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

President Aidarous Qassem Al-Zubaidi, President of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), Vice-Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), and his accompanying delegation arrived in New York City, along with the Chairman of the PLC, Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi, to participate in the work of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

President Al-Zubaidi is in New York to ensure that the Yemen crisis remains firmly on the international agenda, and to urge Member States towards a coordinated international response to address the root causes of the conflict. This can only be achieved through an inclusive and comprehensive political process. This aim is what brings together all of us and the Presidential Leadership Council.

Heading into United Nations Headquarters, President Zubaidi said:

“I am honoured to be here at the UN General Assembly on my inaugural visit to this key diplomatic gathering. My message in my meetings with world leaders is very clear: The situation in Yemen remains an international priority and the only solution is through an inclusive and comprehensive political process under the auspices of the UN. The outcome of this process must be codified internationally to ensure a lasting solution. This includes a process for the Southern people to determine their future.”

While in New York, President Al-Zubaidi will be meeting world leaders and policymakers on the latest developments in Yemen. On Monday, he met with US Secretary-of-State Antony Blinken, whom he thanked for the USA’s generosity in helping the Yemeni people, before discussing the current humanitarian situation and the means to achieve a lasting peace.

Over the coming week, President Al-Zubaidi will meet Member States to discuss new initiatives for recalibrating the political process towards a comprehensive peace.
