Mr. Abdul Rahman Abu Zara'a Al-Muharrami, Deputy President of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) and Vice Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), met on Wednesday with US Ambassador to Yemen, H.E. Steven Fagin, to discuss a range of issues of mutual interest, top among them political developments, economic reforms, and counterterrorism efforts.
The meeting, which took place at the Yemeni Embassy in Abu Dhabi, reviewed recent economic achievements that have led to a noticeable improvement in the exchange rate of the local currency, which positively reflected on lowering prices of foodstuff and consumer goods, alleviating the burden of the cost of living for citizens.
Mr. Al-Muharrami highlighted the critical importance of continued US support for the government's economic recovery and reform agenda and the need to back the Central Bank in the capital, Aden, to empower it to perform its duties independently and efficiently, protect the currency, and bolster financial stability.
The two sides also discussed joint efforts to combat terrorism, extremist groups, and the smuggling of weapons and drugs. In this regard, Al-Muharrami praised the effective US role in implementing the ban on arms smuggling to the terrorist Houthi militia, stressing the importance of continued security and intelligence coordination to build on these successes.
For his part, the US Ambassador praised the steps taken by the PLC and the government on the economic recovery and financial reforms, reiterating his country’s commitment to supporting them to achieve further economic reforms and financial stability, which have contributed to the stabilization of the local currency and alleviated the suffering of the people.
