President Aidarous Al-Zubaidi, President of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) and Vice Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), met on Sunday in the Saudi capital Riyadh with Mr. Jonathan Peccia, Deputy Chief of the U.S. Mission and Acting U.S. Ambassador to Yemen.
The meeting reviewed the latest political and humanitarian developments in the country amid the sharp economic crisis and its severe repercussions on the humanitarian conditions and the urgent need for stronger regional and international support to bolster the efforts of the PLC and the government in maintaining public services to citizens, advancing development projects, and strengthening the capabilities of financial and service institutions.
In this context, President Al-Zubaidi urged the urgent need to ramp up international efforts to support the government and the PLC in fully reactivating state institutions and providing public services and living conditions, noting that the government’s success in liberated areas represents a crucial stability factor on the road to reestablishing security and peace in the country.
The meeting touched on military developments on the ground, focusing on the ongoing Houthi militias' mobilization across various battlefronts and their military escalation in the contact areas, and highlighted the militias' continued grave violations against civilians in territories under their control, including killings, arbitrary detentions, and torture of innocent people, which threatens the prospects for peace and worsens the humanitarian suffering.
In this respect, President Al-Zubaidi asserted that peace and stability cannot be achieved without eliminating the Houthi threat, finding just solutions to the pivotal conflict issues, chief among them the cause of the people of the South, and supporting the country in overcoming the economic crisis caused by the Houthi war.
For his part, the acting US ambassador reaffirmed the US support for the PLC and its commitment to restoring the security and stability in the country and the broader region, affirming that Washington is closely monitoring developments on the ground and is working hand in hand with regional and international partners to end the humanitarian suffering while pursuing a just and sustainable peace.
The meeting was attended by Mr. Mohammed Al-Ghaithi, a member of the STC's Presidium and Head of the Consultation and Reconciliation Commission (CRC) supporting the PLC; Dr. Nasser Al-Khubaji, Head of the Political Commission assisting the Presidium of the STC; Head of the Negotiations Affairs Unit, Mr. Imad Mohammed, office director of the Vice President of the PLC; and Mr. Saleh Al-Quaiti, Advisor to the Vice President of the PLC.
